Creator-to-Consumer in a Digital Age

About the C-2-C Project

The Creator-to-Consumer research and industry development project is one of the most comprehensive and most significant international efforts to envision the future of the book, in the context of radical changes in the publishing supply chain.

The project is a joint effort of RMIT University and Common Ground Publishing. Major funding is from the Infrastructure and Industry Growth Fund (IIGF), Book Production Enhanced Printing Industry Competitiveness Scheme (EPICS) Grants, Commonwealth Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, with significant supporting funding coming from RMIT and Common Ground.

An introductory, overview project was completed in May 2001. The main result of this work was the introductory book, C-2-C: Creator to Consumer in a Digital Age, or Book 1 in the Creator to Consumer series.

Since, then, the project has focussed on three major areas (technology, markets and skills):

1. Technology

This part of the project investigated new and future technologies-with a particular focus on the impact of the processes of digital creation of published material, internet connectivity, digital printing and new text rendering processes such as electronic books and electronic ink. This research activity was completed in October 2001, with the publication of four books analysing the technology drivers across the book production supply chain.

Print and Electronic Text Convergence—Book 2.1 in the C-2-C series, examining new text rendering technologies, including various digital and analogue processes for printing text on paper and emerging e-text technologies including electronic reading devices and emerging media for rendering text.

Multilingual Book Production—Book 2.2 explores the emergence of the latest generation of multilingual text creation and rendering technologies and their potential role in the global knowledge economy including emerging processes for rendering in different scripts, machine translation and global information dissemination.

Digital Book Production and Supply Chain Management—Book 2.3 investigates the impact of internet connectivity on the changing shape of the digital text supply chain, including issues of metadata, standards for information exchange, job management and electronic library processes.

Digital Rights Management and Content Development—Book 2.4 analyses developments in the areas of copyright in the digital supply chain, as well as the logistics of content development of digitised text.

2. Markets

This part of the project produced another four books reporting on the areas of:

New Markets for Printed Books—Book 3.1 will discuss the emergence of new markets for printed books, particularly in the area of short-run digitally produced books, customised books and books in non-conventional formats.

Markets for New Book Products—Book 3.2 will examine the markets for products which perform the same function as the printed book, but using electronic media and rendering systems, including e-book tablets and books created for downloading to personal computers.

International Publishing Services Markets—Book 3.3 will investigate the place of all aspects of publishing in the globalisation of the knowledge economy with a particular focus on East and South Asia.

Regional Publishing Services Markets—Book 3.4 will focus on opportunities for the publishing services industry in non-metropolitan areas, via a series of case studies of regional Australia, and developing the concept of industry ‘clusters’ in the knowledge economy.

3. Skills

This part of the C-2-C project will focus on the human skills and capabilities base for the newly emerging publishing supply chain:

The Value Chain Management Skills Kit—an industry based training program to develop the knowledge and skills base of players in the publishing supply chain.

An Internationally Accredited University Level Course—online and classroom-based course materials as part of Certificate, Diploma,Bachelor, Masters and Ph.D. programs offered by RMIT University and international partner universities.

Industry Awareness Seminars—in major Australian and Asian cities in 2002.
